This 2-LP set, a compilation of the 2-CD sets A Trip To Brazil Vol.1: 40 Years of Bossa Nova and A Trip To Brazil Vol.2: Bossa & Beyond, includes the following tracks performed by Sergio Mendes:
Side A, Track 1 - Sergio Mendes & Bossa Rio: Ela E Carioca (Jobim/de Moares)
Personnel: Sergio Mendes (piano), Sebastiao
Neto (bass), Edison Machado (drums), Hector Costita (tenor sax),
Edson Maciel (trombone), Raul de Souza (valve trombone), Antonio
Carlos Jobim (arranger).
In his liner notes, Mr. DeSouteiro wrote:
At the time of its release, in 1964, this album had the impact of a hurricane. A new kind of bossa concept was born, and it appealed much more to the jazz-influenced musicians than had the first bossa aesthetic of a guitar, a stool and a voice. Instead of intimate moods, a fiery approach, with jazzy energetic solos. Subtitled Voce Ainda Nao Ouviu Nada (You Haven't Heard Nothing Yet!), it included arrangements by Jobim, Meirelles and Mendes.
Side B, Track 4 - Sergio Mendes Trio: Batida Diferente (Ferreira/Einhorn)
Personnel: Sergio Mendes (piano &
arranger), Sebastiao Neto (bass), Chico Batera (drums) and special
guest Hubert Laws (flute).
In his liner notes, Mr. DeSouteiro wrote:
Although Mendes made his New York debut at the
famous Bossa Nova at the Carnegie Hall concert in 1962, his first US
tour only took place two years later. While in the Big Apple, his
first trio recorded an album featuring three top jazzmen: Art Farmer,
Phil Woods, and Hubert Laws, the supreme jazz flutist heard here in a
great solo on Batida Diferente. This is real samba-jazz, including a
surprisingly inventive solo by Mendes, who evokes the influences of
Thelonious Monk and Horace Silver.
